Am Freitag, dem 01.05.2026 veröffentlicht Weird Nightmare „Hoopla“, das mitreißende und melodische zweite Album von Alex Edkins, dem ehemaligen Frontmann von METZ via Sub Pop Records.
Jede Band, die etwas auf sich hält, hat ein Mitglied, das in einem Plattenladen gearbeitet hat. Bei METZ, dem furchtlosen Noise-Rock-Trio, das zwischen 2012 und 2024 fünf Alben bei Sub Pop Records veröffentlichte, war es Sänger und Gitarrist Alex Edkins. Während seines Studiums verkaufte er Indie-Rock- und Hardcore-Platten im Plattenladen seiner Heimatstadt und wurde so zu einem passionierten Kenner des Rock ’n’ Roll – von den psychedelischen 60er-Jahren über die DIY-Ära der 90er bis hin zu den späteren Generationen. Das neue Weird Nightmare Album „Hoopla“ vereint diese vielfältigen Einflüsse zu mitreißenden und unterhaltsamen Kompositionen und zeugt von Edkins’ ausgefeiltem musikalischen Talent. Es strotzt nur so vor Ohrwürmern und eingängigen Melodien.
Das Album wurde von Edkins und Jim Eno von Spoon in „Seth Manchesters Machines With Magnets Studio in Providence“ Rhode Island koproduziert. Edkins erweitert den Sound von Weird Nightmare und verleiht den direkten Emotionen seiner geradlinigen Songtexte mit musikalischen Elementen wie Klavier, Glocken und Kastagnetten einen strahlenden Glanz.
Nach der bereits veröffentlichten Single „Forever Elsewhere“ folgt nun der neue Song „Might See You There“, bei dem CC Mulligan Regie führte.
Edkins über die Nummer „‘Might See You There’ is about going back to visit my hometown and being flooded with teenage nostalgia. Small-town boredom and isolation almost feel like a gift in today’s highly connected world. I feel fortunate for that time spent idly, down in the basement, learning the entire Rancid ‘Let’s Go’ album on guitar with my friends. I find it easy to romanticise that time in my life, even though I was, without question, a disgruntled kid who badly wanted to escape my surroundings and see the world.
“I was listening to a lot of the Irish bands The Undertones and Protex while writing this one, and I think there is a fair bit of their influence. Just the simplicity and big bar chords mostly.
Seth Manchester and I were very into the idea of adding piano and bells to the outro, akin to the Phil Spector-produced ‘End of the Century’ album by The Ramones. The great Julianna Riolino sings with me on the choruses, too!”
